05.08.17 – MIKKO PAAKKONEN: SURFACE MEMORY

Published

Mikko Paakkonen (b. 1990) has graduated from The Hyvinkää Art School and is now studying for the degree of artist at the Turku University of Applied Sciences. His works are abstract paintings that have strong ties to the tradition of american abstract expressionism while being visually, and due to the selected materials, closer to its later era and the transition towards pop art.

Paakkonen has painted, for example, on canvas treated with concrete and recycled materials. In the artworks, both the physical matter of the paint, as well as the brush strokes are visible to the viewer’s eye. The result is voluptuously layered, and an ensemble very much aware of the different contexts of painting.

Exhibition open from the 5th till the 27th of August at ARTag Gallery Studio. Welcome to the opening party on Thursday, August 4th from 5 to 7 p.m.!

11.08.17 – ILONA VALKONEN: A COSMIC PHENOMENON

Published

Ilona Valkonen´s (b. 1980) paintings are concretely three-dimensional. Their base have been deliberately cut through in a way that it still allows them to stay together. In the final piece the wholes cut into the fabric and the fabric escaping from those wholes, together form a surface that is light and lively. Hanging threads of fabric twist into rolls, some of them hang behind the base, some of them in the front like scaling paint on a wall. The painting is a playful combination of linen, colourful surfaces, the empty and the full. Valkonen´s actual brush work is small gestured. She uses colours scarcely and trusts in subtle variations of tone.

Exhibition open from August 11th till September 3rd.

Opening party on Tursday, August 10th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
