Anni Kinnunen is an artist who’s main medium is photography. Her photos have raised interest internationally, for instance in Japan, China, and the USA. Nationally, she has been in various important exhibitions such as the Nuoret-exhibition at Kunsthalle Helsinki or the Mänttä Art Festival. Her works are included for example in the collections of the Oulu Museum of Art and the state art collection.
Kinnunen has worked on a number of her artworks abroad. She appears to adapt herself to the atmosphere of the new cultural and working environment, but at the same time she comments and modifies it through her pictures, sometimes even with quite a critical tone. The premiere of the work series “Odd Familiar” was in Tokyo in March, 2015.
“I seek to work in cultures, where the ties to family, religion, food, customs and traditions are pronounced. The residency trips to countries with strong cultures raise thoughts about the feeling of being an outsider: A human being’s strong need to be a part of a community and to blend in while still standing out as an individual. In February-March of 2015 I was working in Tokyo, where I also showed the Japan-entity of the “Odd Familiar” series, which was done during the trip.
In the work series Odd Familiar, which is composed of residency works, I work under the guidance and direction of the feelings brought by getting settled into a new culture, creating stories out of materials from a grocery store and by using my own body.”
The exhibition will be open from April 26th till May 21st at the ARTag Gallery Studio, Wed-Fri 12-18, Sat-Sun 12-16.
Welcome to the opening party on Tuesday, 25th of April from 17h00 to 19h00!
